Election challenges highlight candidates' character

Posted

Some extraordinary events affecting our local elections have occurred over the past two weeks. Because of that, I feel compelled to share my thoughts with all of you.

During the month April an individual connected with the campaign of my opponent brought a lawsuit to challenge the signatures I collected, which are necessary to have my name on the ballot. This was clearly an attempt to prevent you, the voter, from having more options, and more candidates.

I had confidence in my petitions and the Maricopa County Elections Office, which  independently reviewed and certified my petitions and confirmed my eligibility.

Although the lawsuit was time-consuming and costly, I am grateful that the experience allowed me to show that I will not be intimidated or bullied and will fight relentlessly for the people of Gilbert’s voice to be heard.

I believe in living at peace with people whenever it is possible, but I also believe in fighting for truth through fairness and firm determination. How one fights reveals his or her character.

As I continue my campaign for mayor of Gilbert, I am confident that you will observe my steadfast character. I am a mother, a sister, an auntie, a friend, and a leader who is relentless in the pursuit of truth, community, and kindness. I am running to represent you and my mantra will always be people over politics.

I wish you well.

Natalie DiBernardo is a candidate for mayor of Gilbert.
