Wacky musical coming to Surprise's Stage Left for 2-week run

'Nunsense' playing at theater May 10-18

The Little Sisters of Hoboken will be hitting the stage at Stage Left Productions on Friday, May 10.

“Nunsense,” that wacky musical comedy by Dan Groggin, has been entertaining audiences since 1985, and this production will answer your prayers for fun and music.

It runs at 7 p.m. May 10 and Saturday, May 11, Thursday May 16 and Friday, 17 at the theater at 11340 W. Bell Road, Suite 105. There are also a pair of 2 p.m. matinee shows on Sunday, May 12 and Saturday, May 18.

As “Nunsense” opens, we discover that their cook, Sister Julia, Child of God, has accidentally poisoned and killed 52 of the sisters, and the convent is in dire need of funds for the burials.

The Reverend Mother Mary Regina had a vision to start a greeting card company to raise the funds for the burials, and it would have worked if the Reverend Mother hadn’t made that entertainment purchase, leaving no money to pay for the last four burials.

With four deceased nuns in the deep freeze, five of the remaining 19 nuns decide that the best way to raise the money is to put on a variety show, so they take over the school auditorium and the heavenly hilarity begins.

Here we meet Reverend Mother Mary Regina, a former circus performer; Sister Mary Hubert, the Mistress of Novices; a streetwise nun from Brooklyn named Sister Robert Anne; Sister Mary Leo, a novice who is a wannabe ballerina; and the delightfully wacky Sister Mary Amnesia, the nun who lost her memory when a crucifix fell on her head.

This divine comedy is habit-forming as the nuns trade prayers for punchlines and turn the convent inside out. With more catchy musical numbers, madcap dance routines and comic surprises than you can shake a rosary at, “Nunsense” promises holy laughter for all.

Director Cody Dull along with choreographer James Marinaro work to keep the cast of nuns from flying out of control. The cast includes Siobhan Henry as Sister Mary Regina (Reverend Mother); Suze St. John as Sister Mary Hubert; Erin Boston as Sister Robert Anne; Kathryn Katsikis as Sister Mary Amnesia and Lauren Mauser as Sister Mary Leo.

Tickets are $30 for reserved seating. They can be purchased at stageleftaz.com/nunsense, or over the phone during box office hours from noon to 3 p.m. on Wednesdays. Stage Left Productions is located at 11340 W Bell Rd, Suite 105.
