Sandi Virruso is the Artistic Hand Lettering, Cards & Mixed Media club’s artist of the month, and some of her work is now on display outside the Kuentz Recreation Center’s Pueblo Room.
Virruso was born and raised in Chicago and remained there until she married and moved to a small suburb. After years of school, Virruso became a nurse and worked for the community for 40 years, with the last 25 years focused in the emergency room.
While living the busy life of a nurse, Virruso had two children, a son, Bill, and daughter, Lisa, and she now has three grandchildren, Sean, Kalina and Kaiden. Her daughter is a mammographer and her son works for the Philadelphia Transit System.
While renting in Sun City West for one year, Virruso went to what used to be a craft fair and was checking out the calligraphy work. She was approached by a club member who convinced her she needed to join the club since she already was into card making. She joined then and there and now, 17 years later, she is the Artistic Hand Lettering, Cards & Mixed Media club’s artist of the month.
“I love everything about the club but I think mixed media probably has an edge because it can be used for every and anything! I’ve been doing art as long as I can remember, began making cards in the ‘60s when the kids were young to keep them busy during Christmas break,” Virruso said.
Join the club 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Mondays, 6-9 p.m. Wednesdays and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Fridays.
