OUAZ men's volleyball starts year ranked 12th

It's first national ranking for Spirit

Posted

For the first time in program history, the OUAZ men's volleyball team is ranked in the NAIA Coaches' Top 15 Poll.

The Spirit is No. 12 in the 2021 preseason poll that was released by the national office on Jan. 6.

OUAZ received 113 points in the first poll released by the NAIA this season. That was enough to move to Spirit from the receiving votes category of the last poll released in March 2020 into the top 15. OUAZ was listed among the other teams receiving votes in all five polls that were released last season.

The Spirit went 13-5 last season before the season was canceled. Four of the team's five losses came against teams that were ranked at the time of the game and they ended the season with three straight wins.

OUAZ will return eight players that appeared in a match for the Spirit last season, including Quaid King and his team-best 3.71 kills per set. They also bring back 2019 assist leader Andrew de'Leon.

Grand View was voted the No. 1 team in the poll with 211 points and 10 of the 12 first-place votes. Other teams from the GSAC making the poll are Vanguard (No. 7) and Hope International (No. 15).

OUAZ is scheduled to begin the new season Jan. 22-23 at the NCCAA National Invitational in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
