Stabbing suspect leads authorities on chase in Chandler, Mesa
Posted
A man is accused of stabbing a woman and injuring his father before leading law enforcement on a chase in the East Valley.
James Quanah Ball, 38, was booked into jail on charges of aggravated assault, reckless driving, unlawful flight, hit and run, and disorderly conduct.
Around 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Mr. Ball allegedly stabbed his brother’s fiance multiple times, as well as punching and kicking her. The incident happened at his parents' home near Ray Road and McClintock Drive.
Mr. Ball’s father tried to intervene, but Mr. Ball allegedly punched him in the face. Mr. Ball then left in a vehicle.
According to court documents, Mr. Ball nearly struck an arriving relative while driving. Mr. Ball then went on and allegedly committed four hit and runs in Chandler and two in Mesa.
Authorities from the Arizona Department of Public Safety pursued Mr. Ball’s vehicle, but he reportedly did not stop for marked patrol vehicles.
Records state Mr. Ball drove the wrong way on the freeway while trying to evade authorities. His vehicle then crashed, and Mr. Ball was arrested near US 60 and Val Vista Drive without further incident. He was taken to the hospital for treatment.
The stabbing victim sustained non-life threatening injuries but was expected to recover.
A motive for the stabbing was not known. Records state Mr. Ball had been admitted to a mental health facility weeks ago for an evaluation but was released after a day.
Mr. Ball was jailed in lieu of a $500,000 cash-only bond with court dates March 2 and 5.
