Police shoot, kill armed man in west Phoenix

A man was killed Monday night by police after he pulled out a gun and tried to steal vehicles during a chase that involved the Phoenix Police Department Air Unit, authorities said.

Phoenix police detectives are investigating the officer-involved shooting that occurred about 10:45 p.m. Feb.19 near 60th Lane and McDowell Road that left the man in his late 30’s dead, according to a release.

Officers spotted a vehicle speeding just before 10:45 p.m. near 35th Avenue and Van Buren Street, but the driver did not stop after police tried to pull the vehicle over, police said.

The Phoenix Police Department Air Unit followed the vehicle as patrol vehicles pulled back. The vehicle stopped, and a man got out, police said, and attempted to take another vehicle at gunpoint. The driver of that vehicle drove off, and the suspect returned to his vehicle.

“The suspect vehicle drove to the area of 60th Lane and McDowell Road where the car stopped, and the suspect gets out again and runs towards other vehicles stopped on the street, in an attempt to take a vehicle,” the release stated.

“Officers moved in as the man ran towards another car that stopped on McDowell Road with a gun in hand. This was when the officer involved shooting occurred.”

Officers were able to get the firearm away from the man and provided medical aid until the fire department took over, police said. He was taken to a hospital where he later died from his injuries.

Detectives responded to process the scene, speak to witnesses and collect evidence. The investigation remains active.
