Final votes from the primary election in Peoria have been canvassed and were approved by the city council June 12.

Official results in Peoria reflected the 33 percent voter turnout throughout the state, a record, beating out the previous record voter turnout in the 2010 primary.

The ballots included candidates for the office of mayor and Peoria councilmembers for the Acacia, Palo Verde, and Pine districts, according to Maricopa County documents.

Mayor Cathy Carlat, who ran unopposed, received 30,001 votes and a voter turnout of 34.1 percent. Palo Verde District Councilmember Michael Finn, who also ran unopposed, received 4,927 votes, with a voter turnout of 34.70 percent within the district.

Pine District Councilmember Carlo “Rocky” Leone won his district with 2,155  votes by defeating Denette Dunn with 1,328 votes and Randal “RJ” Rains with 411 votes. Voter turnout in the district was 29.55 percent.

Ms. Carlat, Mr. Finn and Mr. Leone received more than one-half of the total number of ballots, securing Certificates of Election that will be issued in January 2019 at the official swearing in ceremony.

However, Acacia District Councilmember Vicki Hunt and opponent Brittany Burback did not receive more than one-half of the total number of ballots, forcing a runoff to be decided in the general election Nov. 6. Voter turnout in the district was lower at 24.82 percent.

City council must meet and canvass the primary election held on Aug. 28, according to state law.  The canvass is the act that declares the election results official. The deadline for this action was Sept. 17.
