Fourth suspect in custody after DPS-involved shooting in January
Posted
Independent Newsmedia
Four people have been arrested in connection with a trooper-involved shooting in the West Valley from late January.
Kalahn Majeed Shabazz, 20, was the latest to be arrested when authorities booked him Tuesday on charges of aggravated assault, armed robbery and drug possession.
An undercover detective with the Arizona Department of Public Safety was attempting to purchase illegal drugs from a group of people when one of the suspects pulled out a firearm and told the undercover official to leave. The suspects then fled the area in a vehicle.
Authorities pursued the suspects to the area of 91st and Montebello avenues, where DPS said the driver rammed a patrol vehicle and a passenger pointed a firearm at detectives.
DPS said a detective fired at the suspect vehicle, striking at least one suspect, a 16-year-old male, according to records.
The vehicle fled the scene and was located abandoned near 89th and Maryland avenues. A witness told authorities he saw three males flee from the vehicle.
Authorities located the 16-year-old suspect in the backyard of a home and arrested him with the help of a K-9. He was taken to the hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound and bite to his arm, records state.
Another witness alerted DPS that a person had used their phone to call someone. DPS used that number to track its owner to the area of 69th Avenue and McDowell, where they identified Juan Davonte Thomas Cardoza, 21, as one of the people in the suspect vehicle, records state. He was arrested the day after the shooting.
DPS learned a man by the name of “G-Money” was also involved and resided in the same area. The now 17-year-old was arrested in February and is identified in court documents.
DPS later learned Kalahn Shabazz was the front seat passenger during the Jan. 30 incident. He was located and arrested Tuesday. However, he denied knowledge of the incident.
Mr. Shabazz was denied bond due to being on felony release. He has a court date April 21.
