Police arrested a man after he shot towards a highway deputy and vehicle Thursday in Avondale.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety said its 11-year State Trooper was not injured.

Avondale Police Department Officer Jaret Redfearn said the suspect was identified as Luis Aldana, 29.

The incident occurred March 2 before 12 p.m. near the intersection of 107th Avenue and Thomas Road.

According to a DPS spokesperson, the Trooper had observed an equipment violation – window tint on a vehicle that was too dark - and initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle within a residential area west of North 107th Avenue and West Lakeshore Drive.

"During that traffic stop, our trooper, in defense of his life returned fire at the driver of the vehicle he pulled over," Public Information Officer Raul Garcia stated in an email.

Officials from DPS, Avondale, Goodyear, Phoenix and the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office contributed to the investigation and pursuit of the suspect.

Phoenix police apprehended Aldana near I-17 and Dove Valley Road in the afternoon.

Officer Redfearn said Aldana sustained an apparent gunshot wound to an upper extremity. After his arrest, he was transported to a Valley hospital for treatment. After his arrest, he was transported to a Valley hospital for treatment. He was in stable condition as of Thursday.

The Avondale Criminal Investigations Bureau continues to investigate the incident.

The circumstances surrounding the initial shooting leading up to Aldana’s capture are still under investigation.
