Top collegiate golfers will be vying for the NCAA national championship from Scottsdale as the city has agreed to provide funds to Grayhawk Golf Club to host the annual tournament, which is estimated to bring in thousands of people during the course of two weeks.
Scottsdale City Council authorized a two-year event funding agreement with Grayhawk Golf Club up to $150,000 for the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Division 1 golf national championship.
The 2021 NCAA golf tournament will take place May 21 through June 2, 2021 — which is estimated to generate 5,000 resort room nights, and produce television promotion valued at $1 million.
Scottsdale City Council approved the golf agreement during its Aug. 24 meeting.
Championship hosts, Grayhawk Golf Club requested a two-year event development agreement with the city, according to a staff report.
The two-week tournament will be held at Grayhawk Golf Club, 8620 E. Thompson Peak Parkway, in Scottsdale, and feature 30 men's teams and 24 women's teams from around the country.
In addition to the event agreement, the City Council authorized a $75,000 transfer to the tourism and events department operating budget.
In December 2019, the city’s Tourism Development Commission recommended to council the allocation of up to $75,000 annually in support of the agreement, the city staff report stated.
The NCAA golf championships originally were scheduled for three years at Grayhawk Golf Club, but because of COVID-19, this year’s tournament was canceled.
Anticipated tournament attendance in 2021 is 5,000-6,000 people, with Golf Channel television coverage over the duration of the tournament.
Estimated Golf Channel tournament promotion is valued at $1 million, according to the staff report.
“City staff has evaluated the proposal to identify the benefits for the city and the local tourism industry and has identified a public purpose for the city’s expenditure,” the staff report penned by Tourism Development Manager Steve Geiogamah states.
“The marketing and promotional benefits provide direct consideration substantially equal to the proposed city’s expenditure.”
Following the conclusion of the tournament, the event producer will provide Scottsdale with a report outlining benefits to the city and public achieved.

Being in the journalism field is the only professional avenue I was ever interested in, and have worked hard covering topics from school boards to hard news while working for the Independent, where I have been awarded for my reporting.
