The Arizona Department of Health Services on Aug. 24 reports 5,378 total cases of COVID-19 in the nine ZIP codes spanning Scottsdale city limits.

This is an increase of 97 newly reported positive cases from a week ago, on Aug. 17, when the area was home to 5,281 cases.

More than 90% of cases were mapped to the address of the patient’s residence. If the patient’s address was unknown the case was mapped to the address of the provider followed by the address of the reporting facility, according to the ADHS.

Data available through ADHS shows cases per ZIP code are reported as:

  • 85257: 1,053 cases;
  • 85251: 1,368 cases;
  • 85250: 320 cases;
  • 85258: 431 cases;
  • 85260: 790 cases;
  • 85259: 357 cases;
  • 85255: 797 cases;
  • 85266: 153 cases; and
  • 85262: 109 cases.

For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks.

But for some — especially older adults and people with existing health problems — it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia, and death.

Last week, on Aug. 18, Scottsdale Mayor  Jim Lane extended the city's emergency proclamation requiring face coverings in most public places beyond its former Aug. 20 expiration date.

Face masks will  continue to be required  throughout the city until further notice. Mayor Lane will continue regular review of public health data and recommendations, and will adjust the city's emergency orders accordingly, according to the city's website.
