Posted

Residents are encouraged to bring the whole family out for a day of fun to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day at Pioneer Park, 9 a.m. to noon, March 16.

Join GiGi's Playhouse and the city of Peoria for a family picnic, resource tables, food trucks, bubbles, balloons, and an assortment of other family entertainment.

The event will celebrate the importance of World Down Syndrome Day, which is March 21. This date holds significance as Down syndrome is the result of a person being born with three copies of the 21st chromosome.

It is estimated 1 in every 691 babies in the United States is born with Down syndrome, and 161 babies a year in Arizona are born with Down syndrome.
