Peoria gets 5 grants totaling nearly $190,000 from Governor's Office of Highway Safety

The city of Peoria accepted five grants totalling $189,696 from the Governor's Office of Highway Safety for various enforcement and education efforts.

Specifically, about $80,000 will go to DUI/impaired driving enforcement to allow for overtime and the purchase portable breath testers and dry gas to enhance DUI/impaired driving enforcement throughout the city.

These funds will allow personnel to conduct intensive patrols during identified holidays and special events where there is an increase of alcohol consumption, as well as continue participation in multi-agency DUI task force operations.

A grant of $30,000 will also go to DUI training and DUI enforcement throughout Peoria and to purchase training supplies.

These funds will be used to allow personnel to coordinate task force operations, develop task force schedules and to conduct DUI-related trainings for both new officers and refresher courses.

About $34,000 will go to pedestrian and bicycle safety enforcement and education. This will allow for the purchase of bike helmets for pedestrian and bicycle safety enforcement and education, as well as maintenance services on police bikes.

This funding includes back-to-school and school bus zone enforcement projects, partnering with the Peoria Unified School District to identify school bus loading and passing violations, and holding bicycle safety events throughout the year.

A grant of about $32,000 will go to the purchase of speed detection devices to enhance selective traffic enforcement programs enforcement throughout Peoria.

Funding  of about $13,000 will go to enhancing motorcycle safety training and education throughout Peoria. This grant will allow personnel to educate both novice and experienced riders about inherent safety concerns surrounding the operation of motorcycles. This will be done by providing classroom and hands-on instruction to motorcycle operators in a controlled environment.

These grants provide funding through September 2021.

Media releases emphasizing the importance of these programs and specifying that funding is provided by the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety will be developed and distributed as needed.

This is the 17th consecutive year  the Peoria Police Department has received grant funding from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety.
