The self-described “urban laboratory” focuses on architecture, sustainability and education since beginning construction in the higher-elevation Arizona desert in 1970.
Arcosanti will have two clay pit-firing weekend workshops this spring.
The first workshop is Saturday, April 20 and Sunday, April 21. The second runs from Saturday, May 18 to Sunday, May 19. Each two-day workshop allows participants to learn an ancient form of firing pottery that uses natural materials and requires no gas or electricity.
Founded in 1970, Arcosanti, 13555 S. Cross L Road, Mayer 86333, is a project of The Cosanti Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to inspire a reimagined urbanism that builds resilient and equitable communities sustainably integrated with the natural world.
The timeline is as follows for both workshops:
Day One: Saturday
10 a.m. Decorate vessels and learn about burnishing
12 p.m. Lunch in the café
2 p.m. Load and fire earth pit
6 p.m. Potluck community dinner
7 p.m. Presentation on land stewardship and indigenous pit-firing
Day Two: Sunday
9 a.m. Nature hike along the Agua Fria
11 a.m. Brunch in the café
2 p.m. Unload earth pit-firing, discussion on ways to finish
Courses will be led by Shanta Ambady. Cost is $325 (lunch and brunch are included).
Camping is $15 and can be reserved by emailing overnights@arcosanti.org. Guests can reserve a room at Arcosanti via arcosanti.org/stay/guest-rooms/.
