Body found in canal; Mesa, Gilbert police investigate

Posted

A man’s body was found floating in a canal Saturday morning, and authorities are investigating the case as a “suspicious death.”

The Gilbert Police Department received a call about 7 a.m. April 20 that there appeared to be a body floating on the canal near Lindsay and Baseline roads to the south, according to a release from the Mesa Police Department.

Gilbert police found the body and fire personnel removed the body from the water. The unidentified man was pronounced dead.

As the investigation was underway, authorities said clothes and a bicycle were found on the north side of Baseline Road “to indicate the male may have possibly gone in the water on the Mesa side.”

Investigators from both agencies met and decided that Mesa would handle the case with Gilbert assisting.

“Right now, this is being investigated as a suspicious death,” Mesa police stated in the release.

Next of kin has not been notified, officials said early Saturday afternoon.
