Spotlight Youth Theater welcomes playwrights to Glendale

Glendale-based Spotlight Youth Theater, 10620 N. 43rd Ave., will offer a three-class series in April called Spotlight On Playwriting.

Playwrights And aspiring playwrights ages 12-20 and their parents are invited to look into it. Spotlight is now offering a limited series of playwriting classes that will help students grow and understand the craft of writing plays and musicals.

Tuition is $25 per class. Taking any of the classes allows the participant free entry into Spotlight Youth Theatre’s 2024-25 Playfest student playwriting contest.

Space is limited and registration is on a first-come, first-served basis.
Spotlight On Playwriting workshops are made possible through partial funding by the City of Phoenix Flash Grants Program.

The sessions are:

• Playwriting Basics is from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saurday, April 13. This is a hand-on beginner’s class in playwriting. Students will learn the basic elements of character development, storytelling, structure, and dialogue. No playwriting experience required.
• Playwriting II is from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saurday, April 20. This is an advanced playwriting class for anyone wanting to gain playwriting experience. Topics include: genres, plots and storylines, character development, and act and scene breakdowns.
• 10-Minute Playwriting is from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saurday, April 27. In this class students will explore the art and craft of writing 10-minute plays, including finding the right story, developing characters in essential strokes, condensing plot and action and landing a “moment.”
