Aldama resigns from Glendale council to focus on mayoral race

Posted

Tuesday evening the city of Glendale announced that Councilmember and Vice Mayor Jamie Aldama has resigned from representing the Ocotillo District.

The move is a procedural one while Aldama seeks election to the mayor’s post in this November’s election.

According to his letter to City Clerk Julie Bower, Aldama’s resignation will be effective Monday, April 1.

The fourth generation Glendale resident initially won his council seat in 2014 by 19 votes over Norma Alvarez. He was reelected in 2018 for a second term and was elected to a third term four years later.

He steps down with two years left in his current term.

In May of 2023 Aldama officially announced his candidacy for Glendale mayor.

“It has been the honor of a lifetime to serve the residents of Glendale,” Aldama wrote in his letter to the city clerk’s office. “Together we have worked tirelessly to improve the city and the Ocotillo community, and I am immensely proud of what we achieved.”

Since Glendale is a charter city, the remaining council members will pick his successor,Bower said.

His letter also stated that he is moving to a residence outside of the Ocotillo District.

“While I am stepping down from my position, my dedication to the betterment of our community remains steadfast and I am confident the Ocotillo District will continue to thrive and prosper,” Aldama also wrote.
