Florence hires new community development director

A.J. Monroe has been hired as Florence's new director of Community Development.

The town of Florence is bringing on a new Community Development director.
Effective Monday, May 13, A.J. Monroe will begin working for the town. He has more than 27 years of experience, including 17 years with the city of Portage, Indiana.
“Monroe will lead the development of Florence’s land use strategies, oversee code enforcement and building safety inspections, spearhead historic preservation efforts, and drive proactive community-based planning initiatives,” a town press release stated.
While at Portage, Monroe led the development of numerous sections of the Marquette Greenway Trail, Portage’s City Hall remodeling, Founders Square & Plaza, and Lakefront and Riverwalk projects.
“He also played a pivotal role in regional planning efforts in serving as the working group lead for the Marquette Plan and contributed to critical land use planning through his engagement on the Portage Northside and Downtown Master Plans,” the release stated.
Monroe, who received awards for his work in planning, design and environmental stewardship, stated that he is eager to take on the opportunities in Florence.
"I've been truly impressed by the warm reception I've received. I eagerly anticipate contributing to the continued development, preservation, and success, of the town of Florence," Monroe stated in the press release.
Interim Town Manager and Florence Police Chief Bruce Walls welcomed Monroe to Florence.
“Civic progress thrives on passionate leadership and dedication, and Mr. Monroe's arrival signifies an exciting chapter in Florence's growth and prosperity," Walls stated in the release.
Monroe has also served as a volunteer with the Portage Township Food Pantry, Boys and Girls Club, YMCA, and youth soccer clubs. He is has been an accredited member of the American Institute of Certified Planners since 2003 and earned his bachelor’s degree from Valparaiso University in Indiana.
