Pinal District 5 Republican Committee hosts candidate forum for county supervisor

Posted

Thursday, Jan. 25, Pinal D5 held its second 2024 candidate forum.

At the forum, invited candidates are asked questions submitted by the audience in a round robin fashion and given three-minutes to respond. Using secret ballots, the audience then chooses the candidate they are likely to vote for in 2024. Additionally, candidates are ranked in order based on their responses to the questions. This gives an idea of their knowledge about issues and concerns from the citizens and how they might address them if elected.

Thursday’s forum brought together the 2024 candidates for Pinal County Supervisor: Todd House, former supervisor; and Rhonda Mattachoni and David Malton, the two newcomers. Also invited was Supervisor Jeff Serdy, however the supervisor was called away on personal business and was unable to participate.

The questions ranged from election integrity to economic development, taxes, transportation, and preservation of open spaces and property value.

D5 includes Apache Junction, Gold Canyon and parts of unincorporated Pinal County. The candidates impressed the audience with their knowledge and passion for their candidacy.

The next forum is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 22, and will include Arizona’s Legislative District 7 candidates for state House seats. Arizona’s Seventh Legislative District is one of 30 in the state, consisting of sections of Coconino County, Gila County, Navajo County and Pinal County. Invited candidates include: Walt Blackman (Snowflake area-former representative), John Filmore (Apache Junction area-former representative), Barby Ingles (Apache Junction area), David Marshall (Snowflake area-incumbent), Steven Slaton (Globe area) and Andrew Castanzo (Globe area).

House seats are currently held by David Cook and Marshall. Cook is termed out, he cannot run for his current seat, and has declared interest in running against Wendy Rogers, who currently holds LD7’s Senate seat.

The Feb. 22 forum is open to the public; proceedings begin at 6 p.m. with a social gathering at Avalon Elementary School, 1045 San Marcos Drive in Apache Junction.
