Kirkpatrick: Legion story good but it missed post

Posted

This was an outstanding article (“Legion seeking more veterans,” Sun City Independent, Dec. 16, 2020) about the new changes in American Legion membership eligibility.

Specifically, that any honorably discharged veteran who served since Dec. 7, 1941 is now eligible to join the American Legion. The article mentioned posts in Peoria and Sun City West but failed to mention the main post that includes Sun City and Youngtown.

American Legion Post 101 has members from all over the country but most of them are in Sun City and Youngtown. Post 101 does not have a facility of its own, like Sun City West Post 94. Post 101 can conduct its regular membership meetings out of the generosity of Menke’s Funeral Home. The post meets 2 p.m. the third Friday of the month in Menke’s Sun City room, 10307 W. Coggins Drive.

All American Legion posts have the same goals to support all veterans. Post 101 is just more convenient for the Sun City/Youngtown residents. The current commander for Post 101 is David Rohde. We invite all veterans that are interested to attend one of our meetings.
