Ettien: No need to be distressed in Sun City West

Posted

This is in response to a letter from Frank Bagnato (“Accusation about resident was wrong,” Sun City Independent, Feb. 3, 2021).

Explain to me, Mr. Bagnato, how being a resident of Sun City West you are needing to send “a signal of dire distress” and are experiencing “instances of extreme danger to life or property” that requires you to fly the American flag upside down?

Sun City West is a mostly white, senior community where the estimated median household income is almost $60,000 annually and where the chances of becoming a victim of a violent crime are approximately one-quarter of 1 percent. Unless, of course, you have, in your words, “for weeks now” been experiencing a mob of people using their fists or law enforcement shields or poles flying that very said flag to break your windows and breach your front door. Because that is what happened Jan. 6, 2021 to America’s house — the capitol building of the United States.

Being distressed “with the current state of affairs in our country” is not a reason to disrespect the flag by flying it inappropriately. Respecting the flag is our duty. Per Military.com Flag Day, U.S. Flag Code, “the flag represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing.”

I assume you are distressed “with the current state of affairs in our country” because you love America. Please don’t disrespect the American flag for political reasons. And if you do find yourself experiencing a mob of people using their fists or law enforcement shields or poles flying that very said flag to break your windows and breach your front door, call 911.
