Surprise woman killed in Glendale collision, pregnant mother gives birth

Police are investigating after a woman was killed in a collision in Glendale.
In addition, another woman involved in the collision was over 35 weeks pregnant and was taken to a hospital where she gave birth to a healthy baby, police said.
The collision happened before 6:30 a.m. Tuesday near Grand and Missouri avenues.
Glendale police said a white minivan was traveling northwest on Grand and crossed over the raised median, striking a black passenger car heading southeast.
The Glendale Fire Department responded and provided medical treatment to both drivers, who were the only occupants in their vehicles.
The driver of the passenger car was pronounced dead on scene and was identified as Karen Render, 52, of Surprise.
Police said the driver of the minivan was a 28-year-old woman who was over 35 weeks pregnant. Upon her arrival at the hospital, a healthy baby girl was delivered, and the mother is still in the hospital recovering from serious injuries.
Detectives determined neither speed or impairment were factors in the collision. Police said the driver of the minivan initially struck a full-size tire mounted on a rim that was on the roadway. Police said that collision caused the driver to lose control of her vehicle, cross over the raised median and into oncoming traffic, and collide with the passenger car head-on.
Grand Avenue was shutdown for several hours between Bethany Home and Camelback roads.
