Suspect arrested after drug deal turned shooting in Wittmann

A man is in custody after an alleged drug deal meetup turned into a shooting in Wittmann.

Kevin Ray Turner, 25, faces charges of discharge of a firearm, aggravated assault, disorderly conduct and carrying a weapon in the commission of a felony.

Around 4:30 p.m. Jan. 12, authorities responded to a shooting in the desert area near 203rd Avenue and Bradley Road in Wittmann.

According to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, two victims drove to the area and met two males driving a white 2000 Toyota Sienna van. MCSO said they were meeting for the sale of illegal drugs.

However, one of the males exited the van, displayed a shotgun and fired at the front windshield of the victim’s vehicle.

The victims were able to drive themselves to an urgent care center near Happy Valley Road and Lake Pleasant Parkway, where they were treated for non-life threatening injuries.

MCSO learned one of the victims was in a relationship with a man named “Kevin Turner.” Deputies matched a photo of him to the description provided by the victims, who both identified Mr. Turner as the shooter.

MCSO located Mr. Turner Friday, Jan. 31 in the area of 211th and Grand avenues and arrested him on active warrants. However, Mr. Turner denied being present in the van or having knowledge of the shooting.

He allegedly admitted to meeting the two victims earlier that day while walking in the area. Mr. Turner claimed he provided two named males $120 to buy drugs from the victims. He said one of the males owned the van and the other owned a firearm.

However, MCSO was only able to locate one of the named people, who owned the van used in the incident. He allegedly admitted to being at the shooting scene with Mr. Turner, saying Mr. Turner was the one who shot at the victims’ vehicle.

He said he was unaware that Mr. Turner was going to use the shotgun during the meetup and was afraid to call law enforcement. While he is named in court documents, it does not appear that he has been arrested or charged in this incident.

Mr. Turner was jailed in lieu of a $100,000 cash-only bond. He is due in court Feb. 7 and 11.
