Surprise police identify two women in fatal pedestrian collision

Surprise police said no charges are being filed after two pedestrians were killed in a collision.

The incident happened around 8:30 p.m. Saturday near Litchfield and Waddell roads.

Police said the two female pedestrians were crossing Litchfield Road mid-block in a construction zone when a vehicle struck them.

The pedestrians were taken to the hospital where they were pronounced dead. Police identified them Monday as Trinidad Rees, 65, and Emily Curtis, 79, both of Surprise.

Police said impairment is not suspected and no charges are being filed in the case.

"As it relates to charges, there are many different factors that we will consider when conducting an investigation," Sgt. Greg Welch stated. "After factoring in all of the information we will determine whether or not charges are warranted."

According to a Facebook post from Kawika Henderson, who is running for a spot on the Surprise City Council, his aunt and a close family friend were the two women killed in the crash.

He urged people to be safe while out walking, bicycling, etc., and to let loved ones know where you are going before heading out.
