Court documents reveal new details into a fatal stabbing in Peoria from last week.

Shaun Paul Gentilo, 41, was booked into Maricopa County jail Friday on charges of first-degree murder.

Peoria police said he was identified as the suspect in the stabbing death of his step-grandfather.

According to court documents obtained Monday, a 56-year-old man called police around 3 a.m. Friday to report an elderly man was dead inside his house near 95th and Peoria avenues. The witness told police Mr. Gentilo had stabbed the man to death. Mr. Gentilo then left the home.

Responding officers found the stabbing victim slumped over in a chair inside a bedroom. Sun City Fire paramedics pronounced him dead.

The witness told police Mr. Gentilo lives in Texas and was the victim’s step-grandson. He would visit the family about one time a month and had arrived about two days before the stabbing. He told police there had been no prior issues between the family members.

Around midnight, the witness got up to get a glass of milk and later returned to his room when he heard Mr. Gentilo talking outside the home. He reported seeing Mr. Gentilo holding a knife and thought he was going to cut his beard. The witness then gave Mr. Gentilo a larger knife, records state.

However, Mr. Gentilo reportedly went into the victim’s room and stabbed him, causing the fatal injuries, according to documents.

As Mr. Gentilo left the home, he handed the knife back to the witness, records state.

The victim’s wife told police her husband has dementia and she took care of him. She said Mr. Gentilo had a troubled upbringing, and they took him in as a teenager.

Police said Mr. Gentilo returned to the residence later in the morning and was arrested without incident, records state. Mr. Gentilo claimed he did not know why he was being arrested and requested an attorney.

He was jailed in lieu of a $1 million cash-only bond with a court date May 1.

According to Click2Houston.com in 2015, Mr. Gentilo was arrested and charged in connection with an incident in Spring, Texas where he reportedly attacked a woman with a metal pipe. He had been out on bail for an incident earlier in the year where he allegedly made terroristic threats and threatened to kill someone.
