Off-duty Phoenix officer among 2 fatalities in separate Glendale collisions

Posted

A Phoenix police officer is dead after he crashed his motorcycle near State Farm Stadium in Glendale.

Two other people were killed or injured in separate collisions within the city as well.

Blake Justin Newman, 25, was pronounced dead after a collision Monday night near 95th and Maryland avenues.

Glendale police responded to the scene around 11 p.m. Monday for a motorcyclist down in the roadway. First responders located a man with life-threatening injuries and transported him to a hospital. He later died from his injuries.

During the investigation, police learned the driver was Phoenix police officer Blake Justin Newman.

Notifications were made to the Phoenix Police Department, resulting in staff from both agencies responding to the scene. Police said Mr. Newman was driving his motorcycle when he hit a curb and lost control.

Details surrounding the collision are still being investigated.

Phoenix City Councilman Sal DiCiccio tweeted about the incident.

“Phoenix lost a brave hero last night when one of our police officers was killed in a tragic motorcycle accident while off-duty,” he said on Twitter. “Please pray for his soul and his family.”

Phoenix police said Mr. Newman began his service with the department on June 18, 2018 and was assigned to the patrol in the Maryvale-Estrella Mountain precinct.  He is survived by his parents, extended family and friends.

Two other collisions

Elsewhere in Glendale, officers responded to the area of 59th Avenue and Medlock Drive around 8 p.m. Monday. Officers determined an 86-year-old Glendale man was crossing 59th when he was struck by a southbound vehicle. The driver remained on scene.

The pedestrian is in the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

An hour later, police responded to a single-vehicle collision near 49th Avenue and Bethany Home Road. Upon arrival officers located a vehicle that had rolled numerous times and impacted a palm tree on the northside of Bethany Home.

Police said 20-year-old male driver was traveling westbound when he lost control of his vehicle. He was declared dead at the scene.

The collision remains under investigation.
