Mandel: Ex-president should pay for his crimes

Posted

I strongly disagree with the opinions Debby Phillips expressed in her recent Letter to the Editor (“Resident not happy with impeach banner,” Daily Independent, Jan. 16, 2021).

I can understand she is upset by the impeachment banner in her neighborhood as she obviously is a Trump supporter, but to assume that the person behind the banner is vile and hateful is not necessarily true; but it appears that it is true that this person believes, as I do, that the impeachment of Trump is justified and needed.

I support the impeachment of Donald Trump because I believe with his constant barrage of the election result lies, his attempts to bully Georgia’s election officials into “finding” votes, and his rhetoric at the rally on Jan. 6 and many times before that day incited his supporters into taking violent action against police and attempted violence against members of Congress and even the vice president and that Trump should be held accountable for his actions.

I also disagree with her assessment of ex-president Trump “as our last hope for cleaning up the filth and corruption within the halls of our lawmakers,” as some of Trump’s last acts were to give pardons to numerous lawmakers who were tried and convicted of corruption, insider trading and lying to federal investigators.

Corruption scandals have plagued his administration and his business activities for many years, and he faces possible prosecution for some of these actions soon.

I am happy that Trump is gone from the White House, and most people agree with me as Trump left the Presidency with only a 29% approval rating polls show.

It is very sad that Trump did not have the dignity to concede that Biden won a fair and legal election so that we could all have avoided the violence of the riots and the need for impeachment.

If he had done that your neighbor would have no need to post his sign.
