Sheriff’s deputies arrested a man in connection with a fatal shooting in Buckeye.

The incident happened Monday night near Sunrise Drive and Miller Road.

Buckeye police initially responded to the scene but had the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office come out since the incident was in the latter’s jurisdiction.

Authorities detained Javan L. Berry, 48, and his uncle, and learned Mr. Berry allegedly shot and killed another man. Authorities found the victim dead in the area.

Mr. Berry told MCSO that he and the victim had an ongoing conflict due to property ownership.

During Monday’s incident, Mr. Berry said the victim blocked the roadway with his vehicle, made threats towards Mr. Berry, and then tried to return to his vehicle.

Mr. Berry said he thought the victim was going to grab a weapon, so Mr. Berry obtained his AK-47 and allegedly fired at the victim, records state. He said he was trying to shoot the victim in the leg or buttocks, but did not intend to kill him.

Mr. Berry was jailed in lieu of $500,000 bond on one count of second-degree murder.
