Avondale man claims self-defense in alleged stabbing of son

Independent Newsmedia
A man is accused of stabbing his son and trying to injure a police K-9 in Avondale.
The incident happened before 1 p.m. Sunday near El Mirage and Lower Buckeye roads.
According to records, a 20-year-old man called authorities and said he had been stabbed by his father, Alfred Donzell Williams, 49. Fire and medical personnel responded and took the victim to a hospital for treatment.
Avondale police tracked Mr. Williams to an RV in the area and tried to communicate with him for several hours, records state.
Authorities tried to deploy a robot but it was not successful due to the RV being cluttered. After several non-physical attempts to communicate with Mr. Williams, Avondale’s tactical operations unit entered the RV and ordered him to surrender. Goodyear police K-9 Toby was also used, biting Mr. Williams in the arm, leg and chest, records state.
K-9 Toby’s handler stated Mr. Williams tried to bite the canine, although he was also told Mr. Williams was striking Toby as well, records state. A Goodyear police spokeswoman said on Monday that Toby was not injured but played a major role in taking Mr. Williams into custody.
At the hospital, Mr. Williams told police he was trying to avoid his son. However, his son arrived and allegedly hit him in the face and head. Mr. Williams said his son would not stop until he took out a knife and allegedly struck his son.
Police learned Mr. Williams’ son was at the RV to return a bike. Witnesses did not report seeing a confrontation between the family members but noted Mr. Williams stating he stabbed his son in self defense.
Mr. Williams was released from the hospital and booked into jail on charges of aggravated assault and animal cruelty.
He was jailed without bond due to being on felony release. He is due in court March 2 and 5.
