Officer shoots, kills armed man outside Scottsdale hospital

Scottsdale police are investigating after an officer shot an armed man outside a hospital.
The man died from his injuries. No officers were injured.
Around 6:50 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28, Scottsdale patrol officers responded to an emergency call of a subject with a gun at HonorHealth Scottsdale Osborn Medical Center, 7400 E. Osborn Road.
Information given to dispatchers stated that a man had a rifle just outside of the public emergency room entrance to the hospital.
Police said hospital security personnel contacted the suspect and physically removed the rifle from the suspect’s possession.
“This person who did disarm the suspect saved a lot of lives and he’s a true hero,” said Sgt. Ben Hoster, spokesman for Scottsdale Police.
Two Scottsdale patrol officers and one sergeant arrived on scene. Police said the suspect approached the officers with a knife in his hand.
"Feeling that his life and the lives of his co-workers was being threatening, one of the officers fired his weapon, striking the suspect," police stated.
Officials took the man inside the hospital for treatment but he was pronounced dead.
Police identified the man Wednesday morning as Joshua Greenleaf, 27.
"Investigators have learned that Greenleaf was involved in a domestic violence relationship with his ex-girlfriend, and he had made suicidal comments," Mr. Hoster stated in a release. "Mr. Greenleaf was at the HonorHealth Osborn location in an attempt to locate his ex-girlfriend. The investigation is still ongoing."
The hospital said in a statement that the security guard involved in the incident didn't want his identity released.
“Our entire security team is trained and well prepared for situations like this and we are grateful for the actions taken to keep the situation isolated," the statement added.
