Arizona trooper shoots suspect after illegal gun sale robbery in Glendale

A suspect is in the hospital after a deputy-involved shooting in Glendale.

Around 5:30 p.m. Thursday, the Arizona Department of Public Safety became aware of several people known to be gang members who were involved in an illegal weapons transaction.

However, DPS said a robbery occurred during the meetup.

Following the robbery, troopers tried to detain the suspects near 91st and Montebello avenues, south of State Farm Stadium.

DPS said the suspects used a vehicle to strike and disable a trooper’s vehicle.

DPS said one of the suspects pointed a gun at the troopers, to which a trooper fired at the suspect.

Two of the suspects abandoned the vehicle near 89th and Maryland avenues and fled on foot. The injured suspect remained and was taken to the hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

No troopers were injured.

Glendale police and the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office were among the agencies helping at the scene.

The other two suspects remained at-large and were only described as African American males wearing dark clothing.

DPS says people should call 911 if they see suspicious activity in the area of the 8900 West Maryland Avenue.

The incident was the seventh officer-involved shooting in Maricopa County in 2020. Six of them occurred within the last 10 days of January.
