Glendale police are investigating after a 3-year-old boy accidentally shot himself with an unsecured firearm.
Around 5:10 p.m. Tuesday, March 24, Glendale first responders were alerted to a shooting near 51st and Glendale avenues.
Arriving officers located a 3-year-old boy with a gunshot wound to the lower part of his index finger. The child’s father was holding him and caring for the injury, police said.
The boy was treated by the Glendale Fire Department and transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Authorities learned from the father and his girlfriend that they had recently moved into the home. While moving items, the gun was placed in the nightstand in an open compartment.
Later, the father was sleeping in the living room while his girlfriend was in the children’s bedroom with the 3-year-old and another child. Police said the 3-year-old left the room and went into the master bedroom where he found the firearm and shot one round.
No arrests have been made but the Glendale Police Department has submitted the case to the Maricopa County Attorney's Office for review on charges of endangerment.
