Suspect reportedly found dead at Grand Canyon following Scottsdale homicide

Former Major League Baseball player sought after ex-girlfriend killed

The alleged suspect sought by Scottsdale Police involving a homicide at 8100 E Via Sonrisa has been reportedly found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gun shot wound.

Scottsdale police report that about 4 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 3, Charles Haeger, 37, was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound along the rim trail at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, according to a press release.

Mr.  Haeger was a former professional baseball player who had stints with the Chicago White Sox, San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodges.

The alleged suspect’s 2020 Gray Plymouth Voyager was found unoccupied near flagstaff earlier in the day when he was reportedly still on the run.

SPD coordinated efforts with law enforcement in northern Arizona as well while the search had continued for the ex-boyfriend of a 34-year-old victim, Danielle Breed, who was reportedly shot and killed in her bedroom.

The alleged suspect eluded Scottsdale police, who initially responded to the incident at 6:50 p.m., Friday, Oct. 2, for a “sound of shots” call at a residence in the area of 8100 E. Via Sonrisa.

Reportedly, a male roommate returned to the residence in the afternoon and heard multiple gunshots coming from her bedroom where Haeger allegedly exited with a handgun, police said in the report.

Then, the alleged suspect pointed the gun at the roommate, who escaped out of the back of the residence and was able to get a neighbor to call 911, the release said.

Upon arrival at the residence, officers initially gathered witness information and evidence at the scene, which “indicated that a possible suspect might be present,”  and barricade procedures were initiated.

However, the public's help was sought with the homicide investigation  while the “armed and dangerous” suspect was at large.
