Spain representative visits Desert Willow Elementary School

During a recent visit from the Embassy of Spain’s Regional Representative Mariola Sánchez Cascón, Desert Willow Elementary School in Cave Creek student ambassadors toured groups of educators through the Spanish Immersion Program that spans from preschool through sixth grade.

In order to maintain the Cave Creek Unified School District’s accreditation from Spain as an International Spanish Academy, an embassy representative must visit annually to ensure the quality of the program, according to a press release.

Desert Willow Elementary School is in its 17th year of implementing the Spanish Immersion Program, generating a lottery system for entry and ensuring waiting lists because of popularity.

In addition to hosting the Embassy of Spain, other educators from the Arizona Department of Education and neighboring school districts attended in attempts to see a fully implemented program in action.

Students in the Spanish Immersion program spend half their day learning in Spanish with a Spanish teacher and the other half in English with an English teacher.

This approach, a release claims, yields a bilingual and biliterate student that exemplifies multicultural understanding and has a deeper sense of who they are in the world.

CCUSD also has immersion programs for other languages. There is a French Immersion Program at Desert Sun Academy with its lottery meeting Wednesday, Feb. 5 and a Chinese Immersion lottery meeting at Horseshoe Trails Elementary School Thursday, Feb. 6. Both events are from 5-6 p.m.
