Scottsdale’s COVID-19 count continues steady climb

Scottsdale school district information now available

The Scottsdale Unified School District is reporting 40 positive cases of COVID-19 last week, as more than 200 new cases were reported across the city of Scottsdale.

As of Oct. 22, SUSD reports 77 total cases — with 40 being Oct. 19-22.

For Scottsdale, in total, numbers provided by the Arizona Department of Health Services on Oct. 27 show 6,784 cases of COVID-19 have been mapped to Scottsdale’s nine ZIP codes.

City-wide, compared with numbers last week — 6,538 — there have been 246 new cases over the eight day period.

The northeast Scottsdale ZIP code of 85255 saw an increase of 54 new cases, the most for this week.

More than 90% of cases were mapped to the address of the patient’s residence. If the patient’s address was unknown the case was mapped to the address of the provider followed by the address of the reporting facility, according to the ADHS.

Data available through ADHS shows cases per ZIP code are reported as:

  • 85257: 1,209 cases (up 35);
  • 85251: 1,614 cases (up 42);
  • 85250: 384 cases (up 22);
  • 85258: 572 cases (up 28);
  • 85260: 1,051 cases (up 39);
  • 85259: 456 cases (up 10);
  • 85255: 1,118 cases (up 54);
  • 85266: 209 cases (up 7); and
  • 85262: 171 cases (up 9).

For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks.

But for some — especially older adults and people with existing health problems — it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia and death.

SUSD cases

The Scottsdale Unified School District has a new online dashboard updated weekly on Friday, according to district officials.

An active case indicates that a student or employee has a lab-confirmed positive result for COVID-19.

Individuals who test positive are prohibited from participating in any on-campus or on-site activity until the individual meets the return criteria set by state and local health authorities.

The district data includes total number of students and staff on each campus; how many total confirmed active cases of the week; percentage of confirmed active cases for the week; and total cases to date per school.

SUSD has 28 campuses, and their dashboard includes district offices at Mohave District Annex and district departments as well.

Chaparral High School has the most amount of confirmed active cases with 23. The schools with cases are:

  • Arcadia High School: 5
  • Chaparral High School: 23
  • Cheyenne K-8: 1
  • Cocopah Middle School: 1
  • Desert Mountain High School: 1
  • Hopi Elementary School: 2
  • Ingleside Elementary School: 2
  • Saguaro High School: 3
  • Sequoya Elementary School: 1
  • Tavan Elementary School: 1.

In total, there are 40 active cases for SUSD this week.

The school district reports since students and staff returned to campus, there have been 77 confirmed positive cases through Oct. 22.
