Scottsdale Cactus Aquatic and Fitness Center to get new scoreboard

Posted

A new scoreboard is coming to the city-owned Cactus Aquatic and Fitness Center thanks to the Scottsdale Aquatic Club.

The City Council approved on consent a donation and installation agreement with SAC for the new scoreboard at its March 3 meeting. The club will be responsible for providing a qualified contractor to remove the existing scoreboard and provide all timing and other equipment.

Other equipment include Colorado Timing System and a computer to make the new scoreboard operational. The new color video scoreboard will receive funding from SAC, Arizona Sports and Tourism Authority and Fiesta Bowl Charities grant which SAC received.

Scottsdale Aquatic Club has worked with the city for over 50 years, providing competitive swimming to local youth at four aquatic centers across the city. SAC’s program includes sanctioned training and competitions of competitive aquatic athletes.

At Cactus Aquatic and Fitness Center, 7202 E. Cactus Road, there is a Daktronics scoreboard, which began its tenure at the facility in 2008. City staff say the scoreboard has become “unreliable and is reaching the end of its useful life,” leading to additional maintenance expenses.

While SAC will do much of the heavy lifting with the project, the city will provide some assistance with removal and installation of the scoreboards. This includes:

  • Scottsdale electricians verifying a power supply is ready;
  •  Supplying a two-man scissor life for contractor’s use as well as two laborers to assist with installation; and
  • Supply a flat-bed truck to remove the old scoreboard.
    City staff will also install new concrete footing to support the new scoreboard.

Plans call for the new scoreboard to go in the same location of the existing scoreboard and will utilize existing beams. Once the scoreboard is in place, it will become city property.

With a license agreement in place, SAC will inspect the new scoreboard on a regular basis and provide maintenance and repairs as needed.

Staff plans for use being, at minimum, during the city’s Parks and Recreation Swim and Dive City Championship meet and the Scottsdale Unified School District High School Swim and Dive Meet.

The city can solicit its own sponsorships for the new scoreboard and may promote its programs, events and class registrations. SAC may also enter into a sponsorships as long as it receives the city contract administrator’s approval.

SAC will provide the city with 15% of sponsorship revenues it receives or in-king donations of equivalent value. Any revenue the city gets from these arrangements will go into its sponsored teams special revenue fund.
