Police: Suspect sets Scottsdale apartment on fire, charged with arson

Posted

Jorge Barrera Hernandez, 35, was arrested and charged with multiple counts of arson after he set an occupied apartment structure on fire, Scottsdale Police Department officials say.

At about 4:30 p.m., on Friday, Oct. 2, several witnesses called 911 after seeing Hernandez throw an object into a window of an apartment in the area of the 3100 block of north 68th Street, according to police.

“The apartment immediately burst into flames, spreading smoke and fire to nearby units,” said Sgt. Brian Reynolds in a press release.

The Scottsdale Police Department was first to arrive on scene, Mr. Reynolds says, and officers began evacuating the neighboring apartments.

Two officers were taken to the hospital and treated for smoke inhalation.

Hernandez was apprehended on-scene by responding officers, according to Mr. Reynolds, and he was charged with 17 counts of arson of an occupied structure, a class 2 felony, and endangerment, a class 6 felony.

All Scottsdale Police Department officers are expected to make a full recovery, Mr. Reynolds noted.
