Feb. 20 open house planned as Scottsdale considers amending sign regulations

The city is considering updating the building, freestanding and temporary sign regulations that would allow appropriate signs for developments adjacent to the Loop 101 Freeway between Scottsdale and Hayden roads.

During the past several years, there has been an increase in planned developments along the Loop 101 Freeway.

According to city staff, the current sign code does not adequately address or identity these types of new developments, since historically, the sign code was written prior to the construction of Loop 101 and only accommodated signage for local streets and slower speeds, and the Loop 101 did not arrive in Scottsdale until the early 2000s.

The city recognized that new freeway-appropriate signage could be beneficial for all properties fronting the Loop 101 Freeway between Scottsdale Road and Hayden Road, staff say.

On Nov. 13, the Scottsdale Planning Commission initiated the process to amend the sign requirements of the Scottsdale Zoning Ordinance and allow freeway-appropriate freestanding and building signs for properties adjacent to the freeway between Scottsdale and Hayden Roads.

An open house meeting to discuss the proposed changes is scheduled for 5:30-8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 20, at Granite Reef Senior Center, 1700 N. Granite Reef Road.
