Desert Stages Theatre presents “Newsies” at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and at 4 p.m. Sundays, through Feb. 16 at Scottsdale Fashion Square.
“Newsies” is based on the 1992 Disney film written by Bob Tzudiker and Noni White and inspired by the real-life Newsboys Strike of 1899 in New York City, according to a press release, describing the turn-of-the century New York City setting involving the tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a band of teenaged Newsies.
When the titans of publishing raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack rallies newsies from across the city to strike against the unfair conditions and fight for what’s right, detailed the release about a group of boys on the road to self-discovery while battling challenges as struggling newspaper boys on the streets of Manhattan.
“Newsies” premiered at the Paper Mill Playhouse in 2011 and made its Broadway debut in 2012 where it played for more than 1,000 performances before touring, the release noted.
The original Broadway production won several awards for its score and choreography including two Tony Awards, two Drama Desk Awards and was nominated for a Grammy.
The Desert Stages Theatre production is directed by Lisa Barton-Figueroa, according to the release.
