A free eight-hour training program, "Youth Mental Health First Aid for Adults," will be held Feb. 11-12 at Empowerment Systems, 2066 W. Apache Trail No. 116 in Apache Junction.

The event is sponsored by Pinal-Gila Council for Senior Citizens. Register at esmhfa.eventbrite.com or call Braden at 520-367-6937 ext. 102.

The training program, broken up into two sessions, 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m. including a free lunch, is designed for adults who regularly interact with our youth --- grandparent, parent, relative, teachers, counselors, baby sitter, etc. It is primarily focused on information participants can use to help youth ages 12-18, according to a release.

"It builds an understanding of the importance of early intervention and how to help our youth in crisis or experiencing a mental health challenge. Participants will learn common mental health challenges for youth, reviews typical adolescent development and teaches a five-step action plan for how to help young people in both crisis and non-crisis situations," the release states.

Topics covered include anxiety, depression, substance use, disorders in which psychosis may occur, disruptive behavior disorders --- including AD/HD, and eating disorders.

Participants do not learn to diagnose, provide therapy or counseling; rather, participants will learn to support a person developing signs  and symptoms of a mental illness or in an emotional crisis by applying a core five-step action plan, the release states..

This event is open to the public. There will be no sales, A free lunch and textbook will be provided.
