Firefighters Charities host ceremony to celebrate book competition

Peoria Firefighters Charities sponsored a “Fill the Boot with Books” program as a friendly competition among third graders at Sunset Heights Elementary, Oasis Elementary, and Terramar Elementary School.

The goal is to see who can read the most chapters and books in a three-month period.

This year, AZ Family News’ Kim Quintero offered to climb to the top of Peoria Fire Departments Ladder if the kids read more than 40,000 books and chapters. The kids read over 43,000 books and chapters, and Ms. Quintero climbed to the top of the 100-foot ladder for them while wearing full firefighting gear.

The Peoria Firefighter Charities thank the Pappas Schoolhouse Foundation for sending every child home with free books. Desert Choice Transport stepped in when one of the schools needed a bus.

The competition ended with a Fill the Boot with Books awards and barbecue Feb. 27, and celebrated these winners:

• Top 2 readers: 1, Madeleine Miller (2,139 chapters/books read; ans 2, Daya Simpson (1,040 chapters/books read)

• Overall school winner: Terramar Elementary School (22,182 chapters/books read)

• Class winners: 1, Oasis (Ms. Fredericksen); 2, Sunset Heights (Ms. Shlueter); 3, Terramar (Mr. Lamb)

• Individual winners: 1, Oasis (Austin C.); 2, Sunset Heights (Roger Windahl); 3, Terramar (Nathan S.)
