Peoria Police Department to receive $100K in grant funding from homeland security

The Peoria Police Department accepted three grants from the Arizona State Department of Homeland Security totalling $100,311 to help  in further integrating the city as part of the Statewide Disaster Response Program.

The grants will help in three ways: strengthening chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear or explosive (CBRNE) weapon detection, response and decontamination capabilities; sustaining and enhancing the Terrorism Liaison Officer (TLO) program; and allowing agencies to easily share, load, unload, and place protective barricades at special events.

The department has been awarded $40,000 to enhance the functionality of the Peoria Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team CBRNE response. Funds will be used to replace prior funded protective equipment in the form of ballistic shields and a robotic surveillance device, for use in tactical operations.

Funding will also be used to provide training to tactical team members. The new equipment and training purchased with these funds will enhance search and detection capabilities of the SWAT team in the event a CBRNE response is needed.

The department has also been awarded $9,149 to support TLO operations. The TLO program functions as a field intelligence unit supporting police tactical, hazardous material, explosive special operations and uncommon event types. Funds granted will be used to purchase equipment and training for the TLO response unit.

Lastly, the department has been awarded $51,162 to facilitate inter-agency and regional movement of state homeland security grant program-funded movable vehicle barricades for crowd protection at special events and other soft targets. Funds will be used to purchase a skid-steer loader and trailer for member agencies to transport, load, unload, and place barricades through the region when the need arises to better protect high-risk soft targets.

These grants are reimbursable with funding through September 2021.

This will be the 14th consecutive year Peoria has received grant funding from Arizona State Department of Homeland Security.
