Edwards presents Friends of Peoria Public Library with $4,000 gift

Posted

The Friends of the Peoria Public Library had a special reason to celebrate National
Friends of the Library Week, Oct. 18-24, with an unexpected gift of $4,000 from Mayor Pro Tem Jon Edwards of the Willow District.

Mr. Edwards presented the check to FPPL President Jane Cicinelli and Kathleen Wade, library systems administrator, in honor of the dedication of the friends to the Peoria Public Library system.

His gift allows for book sale sponsorships for teachers, the launch of the 2020 Holiday Magic Reading program, the continuation of children’s 2021 STEM programming, and the prizes for the annual library card design contest.

Mr. Edwards also serves as a mentor to the Friends Tween/Teen Volunteer program, providing coaching, volunteer and leadership opportunities for their 27-member team.

Like many local Peoria nonprofits, COVID-19 has presented significant challenges for the
Friends. The cancellation of book sales, the six month closure of the library resale areas and the postponement of other key fundraisers has drained reserves and prompted the Friends to adopt an austerity budget and closely monitor 2021 budgeting efforts.

“We truly appreciate the generosity and continued commitment of Mayor Pro Tem Edwards at this very challenging time. This gift allows us to jumpstart our fundraising efforts and continue to partner with the staff for safe and socially distant programming,” said Colleen McElroy, FPPL programs and publicity chair.

In 2019, the Friends provided more than $65,000 in programming and material support to the library.

Donations in support of the libraries are gratefully accepted. Please contact Colleen at mcelroyc@dcspllc.com.
