Arizona adds over 500 new cases of COVID-19

Arizona is reporting over 500 additional cases of COVID-19 as of Friday morning.

According to the Arizona Department of Health Services, there are 200,658 cases and 4,978 deaths of the novel coronavirus in the state, up 519 and 49 from Thursday, respectively.

The number of cases could be higher because many people have not been tested, and some can be infected without feeling sick.

In a tweet, the AZDHS says Friday’s COVID-19 dashboard shows the lowest number of patients in ICU beds since April, the lowest inpatient numbers since May and the lowest number of patients on ventilators since hospitals began reporting this data.

Maricopa County shows a case rate of 2,965 cases per 100,000 residents, using 2019 population estimates. The state rate is 2,757. Santa Cruz County has the highest at 5,850 cases per 100,000 residents.

As of Friday morning, Arizona has the fifth-lowest R-naught in the nation at 0.84, according to rt.live. Washington state is lowest at 0.76. This is the average number of people who become infected by an infectious person. Less than 1.0 is ideal, officials say.

For those living around Phoenix, the city and Vincere Cancer Center are in the community with a mobile testing van. The tests are free, but appointments are required at www.Phoenix.gov/COVIDTesting.

AZDHS and ASU Biodesign have partnered to make available COVID-19 saliva testing for Arizonans. It’s quick, easy and free.

Testing is available this week at State Farm Stadium in the West Valley, Diablo Stadium in Tempe and Ellie Towne Community Center in Tucson. Details on hours of operation and pre-registration requirements can be found at www.bit.ly/azcovidtestwv.

Over 400 testing sites are available statewide. Visit www.azdhs.gov/testing.

The coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms such as fever and cough for most people. The vast majority of people who are diagnosed with COVID-19 recover.

But for some — especially older adults and people with existing health problems — it can cause more severe illness including pneumonia, and death.
