Young artists living in Goodyear can vie for scholarships, ribbons and Best of Show recognition when they submit their original artwork to the city’s Arts and Culture Commission’s 2020 Mayor Select Art Program.

The juried competition is open to high school and middle school students. The commission showcases the artistic talent of youth throughout the city in a gallery-like setting, according to a city press release. The program is sponsored by Palm Valley Pediatric Dentistry.

Students enrolled in grades nine through 12 in public, private, charter and alternative schools will compete in four Mayor Select Art Awards categories: drawing/painting, photography/digital arts, 3D/mixed media and Best of Show.

First-place winners in each category will receive a $200 scholarship and runners-up will receive $100. Best of Show winner will receive a $500 scholarship.

Students enrolled in grades six through eight will compete for three Mayor Select Jr. Art Awards scholarships: $150 for first place, $100 for second place and $50 for third place.

Students can enter up to three original works not previously submitted, according to contest rules. Deadline for submissions for both competitions is Sunday, May 10, and winners will be recognized during a reception scheduled for Thursday, May 14.

A jury panel of arts professionals, city staff and members of the academic community will judge submissions based on criteria that includes presentation, originality, artistic quality and composition.
